The comprehensive micro-grid and facility renewal project makes JP II Canada’s first renovated carbon-neutral school, a historic milestone in the country’s efforts to meet progressive climate change goals.

Improvements to the educational facility include the installation of 2,700 covered solar panels for car shelters (providing 825 kW of direct current), piping for a geothermal heating and cooling system, a storage system of electric energy of 2.2 MWh and 4 charging stations for electric vehicles. The improvements implemented will drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, previously needed to heat, cool and supply electricity to schools, to near zero and remove around 277 tonnes of carbon per year. All of these efforts are helping to advance the country’s “Investing in Canada” infrastructure plan, which calls for prioritizing energy efficient buildings and smart grids.

Using the innovative Energy as a Service (EaaS) financial model, Ameresco implemented solutions that not only helped JP II become completely energy self-sufficient, but also delivered significant savings through reduced energy costs. 68% of basic electricity costs.
