Immaculate Conception School in Newburyport has a great day in league competition | Sports

On a bright, sunny fall day last Saturday, Immaculate Conception School in Newburyport – home to K-8 classes – had an excellent performance at the Catholic Schools Cross Country League regional meet.

The girls’ team placed first out of 10 teams, while the boys came third out of 11 teams.

The top 15 in each race received medals, and Immaculate Conception certainly won its fair share of material.

Quadruple captain Emma Finch led the winning women’s team in second place out of 63 riders, as she completed the 1.4 mile course in 8:58. Right behind her was captain Julia Davis (9:20) in third, and Amelie Arteaga (5th), Maeve McCarty (7th) and Kit Wichrowski (11th) also won medals.

In the boys’ third place, captain Thomas Thoreson took first place overall out of 67 riders with a blazing time of 7:54. His two older brothers also both raced for IC, but Thomas beat their two times by almost two minutes. Captain Liam Hoffman was just behind Thoreson in third (8:20), and Jude Anderson-Song finished 15th to win a medal.

“What’s impressive is how far they’ve been without a year of competition, said IC athletic director Kirsten Dumaresq. “They all did a fantastic job.”

This is not the first time that IC has found itself at the top of the rankings.

The boys ‘and girls’ teams won first place in the 2018 league meet, and the girls won again in 2019. There was no meeting last year due to the pandemic, so Saturday’s victory marks the third in a row for the girls’ program.

McCarty wins joint ventures

Immaculate Conception had even more to celebrate last Saturday when Declan McCarty won the boys’ JV race.

He beat the field of 42 runners in 9:31, which was over 30 seconds faster than the runner-up.
