Longtime South Williamsport resident Margaret Joann Zeigler, 86, died on November 3, 2021 at UPMC Williamsport Regional Medical Center. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and caring friend.
Born February 16, 1935 in Renovo, Clinton County, Pa., Joann was the daughter of
the late Francis Edward and Julia Catherine (McCann) Hooley. As a child, she developed a passion for reading and writing, as did her father and her own journalistic activities, covering local meetings as a reporter for the local newspaper. She was a distinguished essayist and a graduate of St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School in Renovo. She continued her studies at Lock Haven University, graduating in 1956 with a secondary education diploma. Joann then taught high school English and French in the South Williamsport School District, before retiring in 1993. She was a member of the Lock Haven University Alumni Association and the Pennsylvania State Education Association.
Joann was an avid reader, loved to knit, and supported the James V. Brown Library. Over the years, she has participated in various community knitting and donation groups. Joann loved a good book and a knitting project, making several for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She has contributed and supported Daniel’s Closet, donating hand-knitted sweaters to the less fortunate and knitting and donating baby hats to the UPMC maternity ward. Knitting became an essential outlet during his years of medical therapy. Recently, with the Covid-19 pandemic, she hand knitted mask extensions for frontline family workers to use and distribute in their community and workplaces.
Joann was a member of Saint Lawrence Roman Catholic Church in South Williamsport. She and her husband, James A. Zeigler were united in marriage on August 10, 1957 at Saint Joesph Roman Catholic Church in Renovo, PA.
Joann is survived by her loving husband, James A. Zeigler of South Williamsport, her children: James A. (Margaret) Zeigler of Wyoming PA, Daniel F. (Diana) Zeigler of Williamsport, Timothy D. Zeigler of Portland, OR, Jennifer A. (Timothy) Higgins of Charlotte, VT; grandchildren: Matthew Zeigler, Gregory (Charlotte) Zeigler, Patrick (Kelly) Zeigler, Anna Zeigler, Laura Zeigler, Jane Zeigler, Fiona Higgins, Maeve Higgins, Seamus Higgins, Deirdre Higgins, and four great grandchildren: Lilyanna, Isabella, Pia and JosÃ©phine. She is also survived by many nephews, nieces and cousins. In addition to her deceased parents, she is also predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law Francis Edward and Olga Hooley.
Joann has always been an optimist whose uplifting and encouraging manners were matched by her humor and sharp wit. The feelings of loss and the tears of the heart at this time will pass. The lasting memories will bring solace and smiles of happiness, his legacy freely given to all of us.
